Welcome To Milling Machine Source
www.millingmachinesource.co.uk is the best place to buy a new or used milling machine.
Milling machines are what you use if you need to shape metal or other solid materials and they are suitable for a very wide range of jobs, including slot cutting, planning, drilling and engaving.
Milling is not dissimilar to drilling – the machines have changeable rotating cutters that turn like a drill, but as well as moving in and out the cutter is also able to turn sideways and the machines feed the material through the process.
Milling machinery is either vertical or horizontal, but within these there are a number of different types of machine. The detail to watch out for is the number of axes – three (XYZ) is standard, but more advanced models have five axes and are able to perform more detailed work.
There are column and knee type milling machines, which come with either a horizontal or vertical spindle, and these are the most widely used as they are suitable for general purpose milling. Others include the rotary table for face milling work and the bed type milling for high production work.
Machine milling can be done manually, but these days many businesses now opt for CNC milling machines, which use the latest computer numerical control (CNC) technology.
These have many advantages, including faster, more reliable results, greater productivity and fewer staff needed to supervise the machines once they have been programmed.

Milling Machine
A milling machine is a machine tool which is used for the shaping of metal and other solid materials. Milling machines exist in two basic forms: horizontal and vertical. These terms refer to the orientation of the cutting tool spindle. Unlike drilling machines in which the work piece is held stationary and the drill is moved vertically to penetrate the material, milling also involves movement of the work piece against the rotating cutter, the latter which is able to cut on its flanks as well as its tip.
Work piece and cutter movement are precisely controlled to less than 0.001 inches (.025 millimetres). This is usually done by a means of precision ground slides and lead screws or analogous technology. A milling machine may be manually operated, mechanically automated, or digitally automated via computer numerical control (CNC).
Milling machines can perform a vast number of operations, some very complex, such as slot and key way cutting, planing, drilling, die sinking, rebating, routing, etc.
Most CNC milling machines are computer controlled vertical mills with the ability to move the spindle vertically along the Z-axis. This provides an extra degree of freedom which permits their use in die sinking and engraving applications. When combined with the use of milling machine accessories; conical tools or a ball nose cutter, it also significantly improves milling precision without having an impact on speed, providing a cost-efficient alternative to most flat-surface hand-engraving work.
There is some degree of standardisation of the tooling used with CNC milling machinery and universal millers but this is quite different to the situation for manual milling machines where the standardisation process is much more complex this in turn makes interchange-ability troublesome.
